Robotic Dismembered Pyeloplasty

What is a Uretero-pelvic junction (UPJ) obstruction?

This is a congenital condition where the urine drainage system of the kidney is obstructed at the level where the ureter (urine tube that goes to the bladder) leaves the kidney as shown in the diagram to the right.

How is this condition treated?

Unfortunately, surgical intervention is sometimes required to repair a UPJ obstruction. There are a number of options: Endoscopic repair (endopyelotomy), laparoscopic dismembered pyeloplasty and open dismembered pyeloplasty. Dismembered pyeloplasty provides the highest success rate compared to Endoscopic techniques. Robotic Laparoscopic pyeloplasty offers advantages over an open pyeloplasty in that there is usually a much faster recovery and only small Band-Aid™ size incisions.
